A sudden increase in running, walking, standing, or jumping can contribute to symptoms, but the exact pattern differs for each patient.
Limited ankle motion, calf tightness, foot strength, balance, walking mechanics, footwear, work demands, and recovery between activities may all influence the forces placed on the heel. Muscles in the calf and foot may also become overworked or sensitive.

What Is Dry Needling?

Dr. Satriano describes dry needling as creating a “window of opportunity.” If pain or muscle guarding decreases after treatment, that improvement can be used to practice better movement and gradually strengthen the tissues responsible for supporting the foot and ankle.
The treatment does not eliminate all the forces placed on the plantar fascia. It also does not correct footwear problems, activity overload, weakness, or limited movement by itself. Those concerns require a broader rehabilitation plan.
What Does Research Say About Dry Needling for Plantar Fasciitis?
Research suggests that dry needling may improve pain and function for some people with plantar heel pain. A 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis found that dry needling combined with routine treatment produced greater improvements in pain and foot function than routine treatment alone. When dry needling was compared directly with other treatments, it improved function, but it was not clearly better for pain. What Happens During the Initial Evaluation?

The physical examination may include foot and ankle movement, calf flexibility, strength, balance, walking mechanics, muscle tenderness, and functional activities. Imaging can sometimes provide useful information, but a finding must match the person’s symptoms and examination. Dr. Satriano’s philosophy is to treat the patient rather than the image.
